UPDATE: Community Battery in The Gap
You may have heard that Brisbane City Council has rejected the proposal for a community battery at The Gap. This battery was part of a Federal Government commitment and strongly supported by my office after extensive conversations with local residents and community groups.
The battery was intended to act as a pilot for future community energy solutions across Brisbane. Unfortunately, Council has dismissed the plan, with a civic cabinet spokesperson saying they don't support “plonking giant batteries in public parks.”
For context, the battery was to be pole-mounted and similar in size to a fridge—designed specifically not to disrupt green space. It would have stored solar energy and delivered it to around 1,000 local homes, reducing electricity bills, storing backup energy, and lowering our reliance on coal.
Following the announcement of a new stadium at Victoria Park, I called for no net loss of greenspace in Brisbane. With Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner now supporting the stadium, it’s difficult for me to believe he suddenly cares about our green space.
I’m organising a community photo and call-to-action to demonstrate support for the project:

We’d love you or a representative from your group to join us, share a message, bring a sign, or offer a quote for social media. Let's send a clear message that this decision does not reflect our community’s views.
