Clean Economy Jobs Bill 2024

In mid-February, the Queensland Government has now made a bold move to bring forward the Clean Economy Jobs Bill 2024 to Parliament. This demonstrates our absolute commitment to cutting emissions and moving towards a clean economy. It's all about giving confidence to communities, industries, and investors, while stepping up Queensland's game in the fight against climate change.

The bill proposes the following measures to secure Queensland's economic future:

  1. Enshrining emissions reduction targets into law: Queensland's emissions reduction targets for 2030, 2035, and 2050 will be legally mandated, providing a clear framework for action, with a 75% reduction slated for 2035 off the bat.

  2. Setting interim targets: Interim emissions reduction targets for 2040 and 2045 will be established a decade in advance, ensuring long-term planning and accountability.

  3. Development of sector plans: State-based sector plans will be developed to facilitate the achievement of emissions reduction targets, tailored to the unique characteristics of each sector.

  4. Annual reporting: Progress towards meeting legislated targets will be reported annually to the Queensland Parliament, enhancing transparency and accountability.

  5. Establishment of an expert panel: An expert panel will be tasked with providing advice to the government on progress and identifying cost-effective abatement opportunities to support job creation and economic growth.
